Eat Some Cookies and Help Recovery

JEFF FRANK

This could be the sweetest way to support disaster relief efforts.

The House of Tudor Bakery (aka Baked in the Sun) in San Marcos has created American Pride cookies.  The star-shaped treats are decorated in red, white and blue, and can be purchased in coffeehouses other than Starbucks throughout the area.  Five percent of the cookie proceeds go to the American Red Cross, says bakery owner Rachel Shein.

The sugar cookies are red-hot, Shein says, accounting for more than 30 percent of current orders.

“I think this is bigger than any other holiday cookies we do,” she said.  “They look very patriotic, and they taste really good.”

Some of the 200 coffeehouses in San Diego served by the bakery are also donating 5 percent of sales to the cause.  Starbucks is considering offering the cookies but hasn’t yet received corporate approval.

“There’s not a lot we can do from here to help.  This is a way to take what we do best – baking cookies – and try to make things all for the best,” Shein said.
